Notes for William K. Troutman


William was a farmer in jordan Twp., where he had a tract of 125 acres which he cultivated during his active years. Later, when he retired,He moved on to a small place near Hebe. During his early years, he was a tenant farmer, but by hard work and thrift, he became well to do, and was one of the respected citizens of his township, which he served for some years as tax collector.
William and his family worshipped with the Reformed congregation of St. David's Church Hebe, which he served as an elder and trustee.

Politically, William K. Troutman was a Republican, and , during the Civil War, he served in the Union Army as a private in Company K,172nd Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers. He inlisted on Oct. 16, 1862 and was discharged on August 1, 1863

William applied for a veteran's pension for a number of disabilities(rheumatism, a rupture (hernia), deafness, and loss of a portion of his left index finger, but received his pension for rheumatoidarthritis, In 1891, his pension was $6/mo. which was raised to $8/mo.in 1898. When his second wife died in 1915, she was receiving awidown's pension of $12/mo. He lost the portion of his finger around 1865 during a trip to the store in Klingerstown. As he was tring his horse to the post outside the store, the horse shied and the bridlechain tore off part of the finger.

William's pension record also contains a physical description: When he was 60 years old, he was 5'7" tall and weighed 165 lbs. It also states that he died of softening of the brain and apoplexy. He died intestate, and his son, William Ellsworth Troutman, petitioned the court to be the administrator of his estate. His widow and elder brother both renounced the right to be administrator. The amount of his estate was $381.19 The final accounting of his estate is recorded in Northumberland County Orphans Court, Book 16, Page 24, File 260

  William K. Troutman (CW) was born on 19 January 1831 in Jordan Township, Northumberland Co., PA. He was the son of George Tschopp Troutman and Jestina (Jesty) Clark. William K. Troutman (CW) married Lydia Leitzel circa 1850. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War. William K. Troutman (CW) married Catherine Masser after 1867. William K. Troutman (CW) died on 2 November 1897 in Northumberland Co., PA, at age 66. He was buried after 2 November 1897 in St. David's Cemetery, Hebe, Northumberland Co., PA.
